The aim of this article is to attempt to cast some light on the overall structure of Hegel’s system (the Phenomenology of Spirit and the Encyclopaedia of Philosophical Sciences ) as forming essentially a system of the spirit. The hypothesis directing it is that spirit, being in itself a manifestation of itself, as stipulated at the start of the Philosophy of Spirit in the Encyclopaedia, it is this same essential character that is at work in the Phenomenology of the Spirit and the encyclopaedic system, with this difference, however, namely that where in the latter spirit manifests itself as such, in the former it merely appears within consciousness.
