Critical review of LEED theories. This is a critical review of the different theories of LEED so far put forward. The first theory is due to Bethe and can be throught of as an extansion of the theory of bands in metals ; the effect of the atoms of the crystal on the incident electrons is taken into account through the introduction of a static triperiodic potential in Schrödinger's equation. In spite of its conceptual simplicity, this theory is not much reliable as far as the treatment of the surface is concerned. In multiple scattering theories the atoms of the surface can have a diffraction power different from that of the atoms of the bulk.
