The quantitative determination, under the polarising microscope, of the optical properties of an absorbing monoclinic crystal is possible by making reflectivity measurements on polished sections of type (h0l), which give linearly polarised waves. Reflectivities in air and oil of kermesite (Sb₂S₂O) are given for the directions [100], [010] et [001]. The optical constants n and χ are derived from these values. The direction [010] contains ng. The birefringence is very large (0.46).
