A stake in gender equality Since the 1970s, Sweden has made a big effort in relation to childcare : parental leave paid at a percentage of the previous wage and a considerable increase in the availability of public childcare. This policy is an explicit aspect of a preoccupation - apart from the well-being of children - to achieve equality between women and men by a readjustment of their respective shares of the labour market and parental responsibilities. This work examines how the childcare system has been created and developed and how it is linked to the establishing of a new "contract between the sexes".
