Mechanisms of the disequilibrium breakdown of muscovite under conditions of low rock porosity and low fluid content have been investigated experimentally using rock cores of a quartz-muscovite schist. Experiments have been performed on samples both initially dry and with added water at 680°-757 °C, 1 kbar for times up to 5 months. In the presence of water, localized melting reactions occur in muscovite within a few hours at 757 °C and a few weeks at 680 °C. After 2 weeks at 757 °C, muscovite becomes completely replaced by melt + corundum + mullite + biotite which subsequently reacts to metastable melt + mullite + biotite within several months. The results of experiments on dry samples suggest that the reaction of muscovite + quartz directly...
