Nitrates in shallow wells in Ringaudai, central Lithuania

The article contains the results of measured nitrate and ammonia concentrations as well as pH values in 176 shallow wells in Ringaudai, central Lithuania. Contents of these water quality factors were exposed to correlation analysis to eco-variables such as depth of well, time-period from last, cleaning, breeding of domestic animals, and distance from barn and garden to well. The effects of these factors were different on clay versus sandy soils. In addition to homestead factors, the nitrogen levels in wells may be strongly affected by direction of ground water flow from the source of contamination.
