In this essay, I will examine a problem of the studies of intercultural communication that some theories of this subject may not meet the pragmatic demand of learners, because rough categorisation or heavily biased judgement of different cultures woven in the theories may provide tacit chauvinistic norms of understanding others to the learners of this subject. In order to deal with this question, firstly, I will critically examine ideas of easy categorisation and the “essentialist” method of understanding cultures as a feature of some theories of intercultural communication.
