Possibilities and need of land consolidation

The competitiveness of farms depends on many factors, but one of the most important - area and dislocation of arable land plots. The current situation shows that there is a need for land consolidation, because of big fragmentation of land plots. Theoretically land consolidation can be done in more than 2 millions ha of private land. The hardest task is to choose the regions where land consolidation has to be started first. The main tasks of the article - examine the current situation of agricultural land use and investigate possibilities and benefits of land consolidation projects The indexes according to general criteria have to be calculated for all regions of Lithuania. This will let us choose the areas, where land consolidation will give the biggest benefit for farmers.
