Lithuania as well as other European countries faces demographic problems: population ageing refers to an entire age structure becoming older. The structure of population is result of three basic processes: fertility, mortality and migration. It is commonly agreed that the rapid increase of the older generations (and especially of the number of the oldest age cohorts) substantially changes the socio-demographic structure of society as well as the systems of production and consumption. The global transformation of population age composition poses challenges to spheres of population life in respect of maintaining the financial sustainability of the system, the balanced development of high quality and affordable services.
