Biological activity evaluation of biodegradable thin films with different azo dyes

Dyes have a long history and it is an important component in our daily lives. They are widely used within the food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, textile and other industries. Their molecules are complex aromatic structures, polar substituents and water-solubilising groups. These compounds are applied to various substrates, synthetic or natural fibres. For the natural fibres are used direct, reactive, sulphur and azo dyes. Due to their biological activity they are suitable for biocidal treatment. It is a result of some antiseptic groups present in their molecule. However, the traditional application field of the synthetic azo dyes still remains the textile industry, but its antimicrobial properties is of great interest. Microorganisms are playing an important role, directly affecting the environment. Antimicrobial resistance is a worldwide problem. It occurs when microorganisms evolve resistance to antimicrobial substances. There are different solutions proposed to solve this problem. One of those could be alternative molecules having antibacterial properties. The present study is focused on the development of eco-friendly films with different azo dyes exhibiting biological activity. In this study we have work out the biodegradable thin films preparation techniques. The films containing different azo dyes were investigated with different types of Salmonella enterica bacteria. Their antimicrobial activity screening performed employing the disk diffusion technique.
