International audienceAbstract This article examines how international refugee law derived from the 1951 Geneva Convention relating to the Status of Refugees is unable to address the complexity of environmental or climate migration. The obstacles arising from the individual determination of refugee status or the difficulty of recognizing some form of « environmental or climate persecution » are highlighted. Refugee protection applies only to people crossing international borders, while environmental factors that force people to flee rarely cross an international boundary.
