Recently, we investigated the genetic aspects of milk differential somatic cell count (DSCC), a novel indicator of udder health that corresponds to the sum of the percentages of neutrophils and lymphocytes in the total somatic cell count (SCC). Information about the proportion of the different cell types in milk, in combination with the overall SCC, would be a valuable asset to better define the udder health status. Our findings served as a prelude for the potential inclusion of DSCC in breeding programmes aimed to enhance cow resistance to mastitis.
