Multiple motivations lie behind the creation of this special issue on the rhythms of academic life and academic careers. First and foremost, anyone who has been in academia for any length of time will appreciate how working in the industry has changed. The second motivation for this special issue was to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the much cited and fondly remembered compendium of contemplations on academic life entitled, Rhythms of Academic Life: Personal Accounts of Careers in Academia
