Resource utilization of Norwegian salmon farming in 2016 – Professional final report

This report is an update on the utilization of feed resources in Norwegian salmon farming industry in 2016. In 2016, 1.25 million tonnes of salmon were produced in Norway, using 1.62 million tonnes feed ingredients ‘as is’ or 1.52 million tonnes on dry matter basis. This gives an economic feed conversion ratio of 1.30 (or 1.21 on dry matter basis). Soy protein concentrate accounted for 19 % of the feed ingredients, wheat and wheat gluten summed up to 17.9 % and rapeseed and camelia oil 19.8 %. Marine protein sources accounted for 14.5 % of the feed ingredients and marine oils 10.4 %. Salmon of harvest size was sampled and analyzed for whole body composition for use in retention estimates. Indices of retention and utilization of feed resources were calculated and showed some reduction in use of fish meal and a small reduction in use of fish oil.
