Klebsiella pneumoniae infections affect infants and the immunocompromised, and the recent emergence of hypervirulent and multidrug-resistant K. pneumoniae lineages is a critical health care concern. Hypervirulence in K. pneumoniae is mediated by several factors, including the overproduction of extracellular capsule.
