International audienceMost of the in vitro antimicrobial testing has been essentially deviced keeping in mind extracellular bacteria which relates not only on the in vitro MICs and MBCs of a drug, but also its pharmacokinetics. It is, therefore, a common practice to relate the in vitro activity of a drug to its serum level concentrations after a standard antibiotic dose has been given by an appropriate route, its half-life in the plasma, the degree of protein binding, and its concentrations in the tissues. The clinical criteria usually retained are the response of patients, clinically and microbiologically, after a drug regimen is given at appropriate standard dosage.
