Sites prioritaires pour la conservation des oiseaux marins et des tortues marines des atolls Chesterfield-Bampton et Bellona

The Chesterfield-Bampton and Bellona atolls, hitherto preserved by their remoteness from human activities, are among the last refuges of tropical marine biodiversity. The conservation significance of the islets and sandy cays of these atolls was here assessed from a compilation of seabird counts produced by various authors over the last three decades. The islets were ranked individually according to population size by species and three biodiversity indices (species richness, Shannon diversity, population weight by species in relation to the total). A principal component analysis distinguished three homogeneous sets of islets and sandy cays that differed by their total abundance of seabirds, as well as by their biodiversity. The ranking obtained here differs significantly from that decreed by the government of New Caledonia, where, in particular, islets Mouillage no. 2, Mouillage no. 3 and Loop are excluded from the list of so-called "integral" reserves. These islets here appeared as a priority for the conservation of the seabirds of the Chesterfield-Bampton and Bellona atolls. The importance of the Chesterfield’s "V" for the reproduction of 12 species of seabirds, as well as for the green turtle, is here confirmed. The fragmentation of this site into two categories of islets as defined by the government, one said to be protected from human activities, the other open to activities deleterious to the reproduction of seabirds and sea turtles is arbitrary.Les atolls Chesterfield-Bampton et Bellona, jusqu’ici préservés par leur éloignement des activités humaines, comptent parmi les derniers refuges de la biodiversité marine tropicale. L’importance des îlots et cayes sableuses de ces atolls pour la conservation est ici évaluée à partir d’une compilation des résultats de comptage d’oiseaux marins produits par différents auteurs sur les trois dernières décennies. Les îlots sont classés individuellement d’après les tailles de population par espèce ainsi que trois indices de biodiversité (richesse spécifique, diversité de Shannon et poids démographique par espèce par rapport au total). Une analyse en composantes principales permet de distinguer trois ensembles homogènes d’îlots et cayes sableuses différant par leur abondance totale en oiseaux marins, ainsi que par leur biodiversité. Le classement obtenu ici diffère sensiblement de celui décrété par le gouvernement de la Nouvelle-Calédonie, où notamment les îlots du Mouillage n°2 et n°3 et l’îlot Loop sont exclus de la liste des réserves dites « intégrales » : ces îlots apparaissent ici comme prioritaires pour la conservation des oiseaux marins des atolls Chesterfield-Bampton et Bellona. L’importance du « V » des Chesterfield pour la reproduction de 12 espèces d’oiseaux marins, de même que pour la tortue verte, est ici confirmée. La parcellisation des îlots de ce site en deux catégories définies par la réglementation, l’une théoriquement protégée des activités humaines, l’autre ouverte à des activités délétères pour la reproduction des oiseaux marins et des tortues marines, se révèle être arbitraire
