Tetraspanins (TSPANs) are a family of transmembrane proteins that are highly conserved and found on the cell membrane and within extracellular vesicles such as exosomes. To date 33 members of this family have been discovered in mammalian cells and some of these have been implicated in supporting tumour growth, invasion, tumour engraftment and metastasis. Macrophages are the dominant leukocyte population found in the tumour microenvironment.
