RAYMOND ARON: PEACE AND WAR. A SOCIOLOGICAL ACCOUNT OF INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

none1noIt was the result of many years of Aron's meditation on interstate relations and the problem of war. The work is of great importance even for Aron‘s intellectual biography. It has to be said that after the success of his first philosophical writings , he had a very troublesomerelationship with academic circles. His appointment at the Sorbonne came fairly late and was somewhat fraught. Aron’s election to the chair of the Sociology Department in 1955 was also controversial2. Although he was appointed in the end, at the time the belief that Aron was a fine editorialist – essentially a journalist – more than a university professor was fairly widespread. The publication of Peace and War put things to rights. The book was immediately considered a masterpiece, at least in France, and was very favourably reviewed even by intellectuals who had not appreciated Aron’s previous writings.
