After the death of King Ludwig II, two of the most eminent personalities of the italic kingdom, Wicbod, bishop of Parma, and Ubaldus, fidelis of Charles the Fat, engaged in similar strategies in attempting to join the exarchal high aristocracy, represented by members of the genus ducum. This occurred in the period of relative political stability that the political activity of Charles the Fat introduced into the kingdom of Italy in the early eighties of the ninth century. They both gave their female relatives in marriage to a member of the ducal aristocracy of Ravenna.
