The paper concerns the archaeological investigations of the Uzbek-Italian expedition in the Samarkand region. The attention is focused on the methods of detecting and surveying the archaeological sites (tepa, tepe in local language) as well as the development of the ancient settlement pattern in connection with the transformations of the landscape, especially the creation of a huge canals system irrigating the plain of Samarkan
