Monitoring of historic structures. Guidelines

These Guidelines are one small part of three years of research and implementation work carried out in the frame of the EU project SMooHS. With the project coming to its close in November 2012, the project team provides here information about competitive and simple- to-use wireless monitoring technologies, minimally invasive mounting and installation procedures, longterm behaviour, multi sensor platforms open for different sensor technologies, and integrated data analysis and interpretation methodologies. To verify the elaborated procedures of operation and application of the developed smart monitoring systems in the real-world conditions of various historic structures, intensive demonstration testing has been carried out at several European sites: the seventeenth century Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna, a World Heritage Site and the most visited monument in Austria, Museum Island in Berlin, a World Heritage Site as one of the most exquisite museum complexes in Europe, polychrome portals of the Holy Cross Minster in Schwäbisch Gmünd, Germany, a masterpiece of late Gothic dated to 1310, St. Johns church in Schwäbisch Gmünd, and main office of the Province of Bologna, Italy, formerly a palace of the Malvezzi family built from 1560 on. We hope that these compact Guidelines will serve well all interested in diagnosing and preservation of the architectural heritage.
