The term “hyperconsumption” analytically refers to a “new modernity,” which can also be labelled with the term “civilization of desire” (Lipovetsky 2007). It emerged and corre- sponded to the society that took shape during the second half of the twentieth century. Its main characteristics are intrinsically linked to the capitalist matrix, which actually is its backbone. It involves a continuous stimulation of demand, marketing and an endless multipli- cation of needs that support and fuel it, thus ultimately leading to the advent of consumer capitalism that has replaced the previous production-based economic systems.
