The essay explores the superimposition of gender meanings on the distinction between public and private space in Western culture. Especially in those societies which have inherited the philosophical assumptions of the Enlightenment, the public domain is considered as particularly suited for proper male qualities, whereas the private domain has been identified as the site for attitudes traditionally regarded as feminine. The essay explores how this division has been further fuelled in the industrial capitalism and liberal economies with the cult of true domestic womanhood
