The journal Biomaterials continues to improve in both quality and efficiency. It is now clearly established as the leading journal in this field, with an Impact Factor, as announced in June 2009, of 6.646 and a rejection rate of around 75%. At the same time, we are witnessing a significant change to the understanding of biomaterials science, which has consequences for the scope of the journal. I have recently written a Leading Opinion Paper in the journal (\u2018On the Nature of Biomaterials\u2019, Vol 30, p5897-5909) which gives a personal view of the manner in which biomaterials is changing, and readers and author are referred to this for an appreciation of our scope.
