Vanadium oxide is the main component of catalysts for the selective oxidation of hydrocarbons, either in the form of dispersed oxide over supports, or in multi-component mixed oxides, or incorporated inside inert or reactive matrixes. In this communication, several examples concerning the effect of the preparation procedures and of the presence of promoters on the properties of vanadium oxide in various catalytic systems are discussed
