none2This work focuses on the distribution and sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a sediment core and surface sediments from a heavily contaminated lagoon (Pialassa Baiona) in Italy, where the rapid transfer of land-based pollutants into the aquatic environment by industrial discharge is of great concern. Total PAHs concentrations in the sediment core ranged from 2.0 to 440 g/g. The ratio of anthracene to the sum of anthracene and phenanthrene ANT/(ANT+PHE), an index to distinguish petrogenic and pyrogenic sources of PAHs, was more than 0.1 in the sediment record.
