The main finding of this paper concerns the distribution of constitutive nitric oxide synthase isoform NOS1 (also known as neuronal NOS, because originally described in nervous tissue) in murine airways. In particular, NOS1 is expressed in tracheal epithelial cells in mice, as shown by immunolocalization, NADPH-diaphorase immunoblotting and PCR. This result may prove helpful in understanding the pathogenesis of airway hyperresponsiveness
