Fluorescent sensors are obtained with a fluorophore-spacer-receptor approach. The systems described in this chapter feature receptors selective for certain transition metal cations, eg Cu(II), Ni(II), Zn(II). The fluorophores may be either organic molecules or metal complexes. More complex systems based on metal-ligand interactions are also presented, capable of sensing aminoacids with a fluorescent signa
