The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of ramipril and nitrendipine on urinary albumin excretion (UAE) in hypertensive patients with non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (NIDDM) and impaired renal function. Forty patients with mild hypertension with NIDDM and persistent albuminuria (> 300 mg/24h) were studied. After a 3-week run-in period on placebo, patients were randomly treated with ramipril 5 mg once daily or nitrendipine 20 mg once daily for 6 months, according to a double-blind design. Blood pressure (BP), UAE, creatinine clearance and glycosilated haemoglobin were evaluated at the end of the placebo period and after 1,3 and 6 months of active treatment.
