Fish spatial regime shifts associated to non-native green beds of a newly-introduced tropical seaweed in the Mediterranean

[eng] The establishment of non-native seaweeds in the Mediterranean Sea may trigger important changes in ecosystems functioning, especially when habitat-forming species are involved. However, the community and ecosystem-level effects of newly created habitat still remain largely understudied. Here we studied the spatial distribution of two fish species which are key members of shallow soft-sediment food webs (the razorfish Xyricthys novacula and the Bothus podas) as well as important for local fisheries, regarding the colonization of a newly-introduced tropical green seaweed Halimeda incrassata in the Mediterranean Sea. We have used a spatially-explicit before-after-control-impact (BACI) model and a unique data-set formed by six years of fine-scale spatial information of fish and non-native seaweed distribution and abundance. We demonstrate a long-term alteration on the distribution of X. novacula characterized by a shift towards the non-native Halimeda incrassata beds, while no effect on B. podas. The introduction of the tropical seaweed H. incrassata has lead the re-distribution of native fish species, potentially by harbouring a greater biodiversity of species at the base of the food-web than native habitat (i.e. large shallow areas covered by sand) trough adding biogenic structure to an otherwise bare sediment. Therefore non-native habitat-forming species have the potential to maintain the production of diverse ecosystem and contribute to the provisioning of services to humans in otherwise generally are poor (in terms of biodiversity) such as soft-bottom shallow habitats.[spa] El establecimiento de algas no nativas en el mar Mediterr´aneo puede desencadenar cambios importantes en el funcionamiento de los ecosistemas, especialmente cuando se trata de especies formadoras de h´abitats. Sin embargo, la comunidad y los efectos a nivel de ecosistemas del h´abitat reci´en creado a´un siguen siendo poco estudiados. En este trabajo hemos estudiado la distribuci´on espacial de dos especies de peces que son miembros clave de redes alimenticias de sedimentos blandos poco profundos ( textit Xyricthys novacula y el textit Bothus podas), as´ı como tambi´en importantes para las pesquer´ıas locales, en relaci´on con la colonizaci´on de una alga verde tropical textit Halimeda incrassata recientemente introducida en el mar Mediterr´aneo. Hemos utilizado un modelo de impacto espacial antes-despu´escontrol-impacto (BACI) espacialmente expl´ıcito y un conjunto de datos ´unico formado por seis a˜nos de informaci´on espacial de escala fina de la distribuci´on y abundancia de los peces y de la alga no nativa. Demostramos una alteraci´on a largo plazo en la distribuci´on de textit X. novacula caracterizada por un cambio hacia la ´area invadida por textit Halimeda incrassata, mientras que no encontramos efecto en textit B. podas. La introducci´on del alga tropical textit H. incrassata ha provocado a la redistribuci´on de especies de peces nativos, albergando potencialmente una mayor biodiversidad de especies en la base de la red alimentaria que el h´abitat nativo (es decir, grandes ´areas poco profundas cubiertas de arena) a trav´es de la adici´on de estructura biog´enica a un sedimento desnudo.
