The new species Pluteus neotropicalis occurs in habitats situated in tropical and subtropical regions in the states of Colima, Quintana Roo, and Veracruz, Mexico. Morphologically, P. neotropicalis is most closely related to the northern temperate P. thomsonii, from which it is differentiated by its obtuse and short rostrate cystidia
