An appropriate operator for the quantum description of the relative phase in the interaction of a three-level atom with quantum fields was investigated. From the phase states obtained in this procedure, a probability distribution function for the relative phase was defined and studied. It was shown how the formalism could be applied to understanding more involved phenomena
