BACKGROUND: Bronchiolitis obliterans syndrome is the main long-term complication of lung transplantation that limits survival of lung transplant patients. Its pathophysiologic mechanisms are still poorly understood but it seems to result from a chronic immunologic/inflammatory insult leading to excessive fibroproliferation.
