From resistance to militancy: the human rights defense by the evangelic churches (1976-1983) and the support of same sex marriage (2010) in Argentina

Religious actors are increasingly participating in the contemporary\ua0public arena. In Latin America, apart from the\ua0Catholic political activism, we have to add the activism of\ua0different evangelical groups. This article compares two\ua0processes of political participation of historical protestant\ua0churches in Argentina: the Human Rights’ defense during\ua0the military dictatorship (1976-1983) and the support to\ua0the same-sex marriage law (2010). Our hypothesis is that\ua0both historical processes share some significant characteristics\ua0to understand the styles of political participation of\ua0religious actors (not related to political parties): they adopted\ua0a public position in favor of both causes and formed\ua0alliances with other religious and nonreligious actors,\ua0among which they played a leadership role
