The paper aims at offering a knowledge basis for networking the shop-floor devices of an industry, especially the electrical drives, by presenting the state-of-the-art on the integration architectures and the communication protocols. Particular attention is paid to the real-time requirements and the increasing need of deterministic operations. Recent extension of Ethernet networks to the shop floor is also addressed
