Note sulla lettura di Cassio Dione in Celio Secondo Curione

The aim of this paper is to underline Celio Secondo Curione's activity as philologist and educator in Basel. Persecuted in Italy because of his aim to spread the ideas of the Reformation, he first moved to Lausanne and then (1547) to Basel, where he taught rhetoric also thanks to Bullinger's aid, holding the chair of Eloquence and Literature. Thanks to his relationship with Jerome Froben, he edited ancient authors with translation and imposing commentaries. In Basel Curione was a sort of arbiter between the Zurich's and Basel's Church, the supporters of Calvin, Zwingli, and the Anabaptists. Among the editions of classical authors we could remember the annotations to Livy's edition printed by Herwagen, the edition of several Cicero's works, of Appian, Juvenal, Aristotle, the Nova Scholia to Juvenal and Persius. Apart from Curione's role in the Reformation movement, the humanistic ideal of a perfect education seems to be the purpose he followed in his works
