Aim of this paper is to illustrate the growth of the Italian natural gas industry after the Second World War, underlining the general picture of national energy industries as they evolved from the inter-wars period onwards. The development of a modern methane industry in Italy after 1945 is directly correlated with the emergence of the State-owned company Agip (since 1953 part of Eni group) as pivot of the national energy system
