We analyse the options one has when one wishes to describe life courses as sequences, emphasising the distinction between atomistic and holistic approaches as well as between static and dynamic approaches. We then discuss some approaches more oriented towards explanation: optimal matching and a monothetic divisive algorithm for the clustering of sequences of life courses. Finally, we discuss two examples of applications stemming from our own past research
