Protection of maternity and newborn life: an empirical intervention to promote the anonymous birth and develop culturally competent care

The incidence of unintended pregnancy remains high in Italy. In Italy induced abortion is permitted and often is the only choice that women know. Official statistics and nationally representative surveys, show that in the country there are a decline in the abortion rate between italian women and an incresead rate of abortion between immigrant women. So the aims of the project is to promote the anonymous birth in the country and to develop culturally competent care (social and health workers) The present research is promoted by the Consortium “Preferring Life” and the Presidency of the Council of Ministers. A literature review on psyco-social databases is carried out. The qualitative phase consisted of spot analyses broadcasted in Italy and abroad, in-depth interviews within the professionals community and women who decided to terminate the pregnancy or women who induced abortion (or who have abortions). The quantitative phase consisted of a questionnaire within professionals across Italy. It emerges a lack of information and communication on the issue at a national niveau. It is need a training about the alternatives to abortion (anonymous birth) and about the development of culturally competent care. A training course is implemented within public and private professionals and volunteers (health and social) across Italy; it is designed to the acquisition of cultural knowledge and skills to integrate cultural and religious differences.
