Motivation for treatment and behaviour change among substance abusers participating in programs of psychosocial rehabilitation

The aim of the research was to determine the progress of changes in motivation for treatment and behaviour of people addicted to alcohol and its interconnections. 120 people addicted to alcohol (55 women and 65 men, aged from 23 to 65) treated at the National Centre for Addictive Disorders, Vilnius Branch, in Minnesota and Psychosocial rehabilitation programs were questioned. The questionnaire submitted to the examined people included sociodemographic questions, questions on use of psychoactive substances, questionnaires of circumstances, motivation, readiness and suitability (CMRS) (De Leon, 1993), SOCRATES-8A ( Miller & Tonigan, 1990). The analysis of results of the continuous investigation shown that important changes in motivation for treatment and stage of behaviour changes were observed in participants of Minnesota program. Besides, more significant manifestation of motivation for treatment in people participating in Minnesota program is related with a higher stage of changes in behaviour before the treatment. Between people participating in Psychosocial rehabilitation program, more significant expression of motivation for treatment before and after the treatment is related with higher stage of changes in behaviour after the treatment. Obtained results also revealed that a higher stage of changes in behaviour after the treatment is forecasted by higher level of expression of addiction, shorter duration of addiction, bigger motivation for treatment (after the participation in the program) and more significant expression of the stage of change in behaviour before the participation in the program.
