Markers of Expectation in Spoken English and Lithuanian The present research paper focuses on the analysis of the markers of the semantic field of expectation: the English modal adverbs of course and naturally and the Lithuanian equivalents žinoma, aišku, natūralu and natūraliai. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of the selected markers of expectation in spoken discourse and to compare the findings in English and Lithuanian according to the functions of these adverbs in the utterance. Quantitative and qualitative methods have been applied as the research is aimed at the frequency count as well as the cross linguistic analysis. Since this paper deals with a corpus-based study, the data to achieve this goal have been obtained from the British National Corpus (BYU-BNC), the Corpus of Contemporary Lithuanian Language, the Parallel Corpus of English and Lithuanian and the multilingual online dictionary Glosbe. The results show that the English marker of expectation of course is more frequent than naturally in spoken discourse and that of course is highly polyfunctional and its closest correspondences are aišku and žinoma, but not natūraliai or natūralu.
