The conceptualization of current events in the headlines of lrytas.lt political articles

The object of this thesis is lexis, used in Lrytas.lt political articlesʼ headlines. The aim is to analyse current events and lexical expressions, such as metaphor, metonymy, neologisms, lingo and phrases, such as phraseological units, simile and collocations, used to describe and reveal these events in articlesʼ headlines. Five objectives were established to achieve this aim. First, to analyse the main concepts used in this thesis. Second, to appoint words used in 190 headlines in groups by their firsthand meaning. Third, to analyse which words are used figuratively (metaphorically, metonymically), what is the purpose of neologisms, lingo and phrases (phraseological units, simile and collocations) and what kind of political content they reveal. Then, describe how content of articles is coveyed in headlines. And last, to compare original English articles to translated articles. The subject of this thesis is relevant because the focus is on a specific topic (Syria refugee crisis and annexation of Crimea). This thesis explains how lexis helps to reveal articlesʼ content in headlines. These areas were conceptualized in articles: the place where the event took part, a person or a group of people that were involved in the event and certain actions (political or martial) that took an important part. Reaction and condition of those people were also provided in some articles. 122 metaphors, 76 metonymies, two neologisms, one example of lingo, ten similes, 30 phraseological units and five collocations were found in 190 headlines. These results were found after analysing 34 original and translated headlines: the main point of an article is not as clear in a translated headline as in an English one. Intrigue is considered one of the main goals when translating the headline to Lithuanian, while very little information is provided. All in all, results show that sometimes misleading vocabulary is used. It is quite clear that nowadays the importance of the headline in some news portals has lost its purpose. It can be noted, that readerʼs opinion on a particular subject can also be shaped by the headline. That is why metaphors, metonymies, connotative units and similes in headlines are used so widely. It is because the main focus is on website‘s ratings, not the accuracy of the articleʼs keynote
