Improvised explosive devices are used which contain ‘‘homemade’’ explosives rather than high explosives because of the relative ease with which such components can be procured. Many methods such as chromatography–mass spectrometry, scanning electron microscopy, stereomicroscopy, capillary electrophoresis are available for use in the identification of explosive residues on objects and bomb fragments.
