The prevalence of aggression, depression and mania in lithuanian imprisonment offices as evaluated by questionnaires

The prevalence of aggression, depression and mania was evaluated in Lithuanian imprisonment offices by means of the following questionnaires: Beck depression scale, Bas- Darki test and Altman self- rating mania scale. Data was collected from these Lithuanian imprisonment offices: female prison in Panevėžys, mental hospital in Rokiškis, I and II prison in Vilnius. 576 persons filled in the questionnaires: 324 imprisoned persons, 88 mentally ill persons and 164 persons employed in prisons. The results of the study are as follows: 1. Physical, secondary, collateral, verbal aggressions, irritable, displease, suspect ion, aggressing index, animosity index prevale between prisoners and mentally ill persons and no so much among persons employed in prisons. The largest number of persons with negative set is among prisoners and the smallest number between mentally ill persons. Mentally ill people feel guilty more often than prisoners. 2. Men experience stronger physical aggression in comparison to females. Physical and verbal aggressions are strongly expressed among mentally ill persons, where irritability, negativity, aggression and animosity are strongly expressed among prisoners. Displeasure and irritability show the same expression level both in mentally ill and imprisoned persons as compared to persons employed in prisons. 3. There are more depressed persons among prisoners than among people employed in prisons. Depression is more expressed in mentally ill persons and prisoners than among employed persons. Mentally ill and imprisoned females experience the strongest depression. 4. Mentally ill females experience mania syndrome more often than employed in imprisonment offices. People with further education level show lower levels of mania scores than persons with lower levels of education
