Japan in the east asian system of trade after the arrival of europeans from 16th until first half of 17th century

Subject of Bachelors Thesis is "Japan in the East Asian System of Trade after arrival of Europeans from 16th until first half of 17th century". Object of Thesis – Japanese trade relations in East Asian region. The main goals of the work are: evaluate how did the system of trade changed during the XVI - XVII century and how did the political processes within Japan and East Asia affected those changes. The main goals of the Thesis are: by presenting historical information about Japanese trade relations in East Asia and describing political situation before and after European arrival in the region, to analyze: 1) How did Japanese place in the trade system of East Asia changed over time, during the period of XVI - XVII centuries, 2) How and why did missionaries got directly involved in trade 3) How did the main political processes in Japan eventually changed the situation of Portuguese merchants and Jesuit missionaries until their expulsion. The main problem that is examined in Thesis is how did arrival of Europeans changed the trade system in the region of East Asia and how did government of Japan changed their attitude towards European traders and missionaries. By using historical descriptive and historical perspective methods, the conclusions are: trade system in East Asia, which formed in the beginning of XV century between China and Japan, that had been based on tribute and gift, collapsed before arrival of Europeans. Political division, independent daimyō in the western part of Japan and destructive wakō raids helped Portuguese quite easily to gain a foothold in trade between China and Japan as brokers. Secondly, the work of missionaries, first of all Jesuits, was very important, not only they were the main diplomats in Japan, that represented European interests in Japan, but were involved in trade as well. It may seem strange, but Jesuits, at some extent were forced by daimyō to act as mediators and help them to get their desired merchandise. There is no doubt that missionaries were the integral and very important part of new trade system in East Asia after arrival of Europeans in the middle of XVI century. Thirdly, changing political context in Japan deeply affected positions of Portuguese and Jesuits in the trade system of East Asia. Even though Oda Nobunaga was sympathetic towards Europeans but after Toyotomi Hideyoshi took power the situation in Japan was gradually deteriorating for Portuguese merchants and Jesuits, after Dutch became active in the region of East Asia, Hideyoshi and his successors saw them as an opportunity to get rid of Portuguese and replace them, which eventually happened in the middle of XVI century and marked the end of Portuguese and Jesuits in Japan.
