Ethical code of kristijonas donelaitis

Ethical Code of Kristijonas Donelaitis. The objective of this research is to analyse and obtain wide spectrum of ethical influences and ambitions combined in keystone of lithuanian literature – epic poem „The seasons“ by Kristijonas Donelaitis. Complex ethical code expressed in this epos is not only a moral monument and historical illustration of the Age of enlightment, but also a living construct of intertextuality. The most important creation of lithuanian history represents shifting consciousness of a peasant society of Lithuania minor. Donelaitis creates wide ethical program, which must hold against the invasion of settlers from german world, against difficulties of serfhood and vanishing moral, national identity. In this work we find vast Donelaitis‘ cultural horizon and conscious attempt to unite most useful elements of the Age of enlightment, protestant pietism, antique morality and national tradition, which succeeds in combining ancient view of nature with christian god to help sustaining lithuanian cultural society throughout long times of occupation. By masterly created poetical picture of changing nature, individual must stick with it, keeping the most important key to morality and survivor – diligence. The peasant must question fallen ruling class, to not mimic them, and restrain ethical foundation of the past. Universal moral code of „The seasons“ holds faith, abstinence, hard work, respect for tradition and elders, to keep the nation alive.
