Patients’ self-efficacy and self-care influence on second type diabete control

Diabetes mellitus – significant health care problem in the world. The number of diabetic patients is rapidly growing each year, only II type diabetes cases part comprises approximately 80-90% of all cases. The chronic no communicable disease worsening quality of life, efficiency and survival. The course of disease, complications and prognosis are related to ability manage and control disease, self-care and care about health: to comply with proper nutrition, maintaining physical activity and in accordance with the intended use of pharmaceuticals. All this is appropriate self–care and self-efficacy in patients with second type diabetes. Keywords: II type diabetes mellitus, self-care, self-efficacy, signs of anxiety and depression. The aim of research work: to evaluate and discover patients with II type diabetes mellitus self-care and self-efficacy influence to disease control and bilateral interaction. Tasks of work: 1. To assess self-care of patients with II types diabetes mellitus. 2. To evaluate self-efficacy of study participants with II types diabetes mellitus. 3. To estimate self-care and self-efficacy bilateral interaction. 4. To evaluate study participants’ self-care and self-efficacy relations with their anxiety and depression status. Materials and methods. The study-survey carried out in 2017 at Vilnius University Hospital Santara clinics (VUHSC) hospital and clinic endocrinology departments, PU Antakalnis outpatient for diabetes school, Baltupiu Family Medicine Centre. The study participants were selected who suffer type II diabetes. A total of 100 respondents suffering from type II diabetes. Respondents survey conducted at 2017, from February to April. The study carried out used the original anonymous questionnaire and three instruments-questionnaires: Self-Care Questionnaire; Self-Efficacy Questionnaire; Hospital Anxiety and Depression (HAD) Scale. Data analysis was performed using statistical analysis “SPSS 24.0 for Mac OS X” and “Ms Excel 2016 for Mac OS X” applications. Results and conclusions. 64 female (64%) and 36 male (36 %) with type II diabetes have participated in the study. The subjects age average was 63.40 10.55 years, women – 62.30 11.22 years and men 65.61 9,00 years (p=0,13). Patients with type II diabetes, both female and male self-care overall average was 3.37 points regardless of the level of education, age and duration of diabetes. The study participants' average self-efficacy – 6.68 points, there was no association with subjects’ education, age, duration of disease, but with gender: female self-efficacy average scores were higher than male. Patients with type II diabetes self-care and self-efficacy assessments were directly connected, i.e. subjects reported higher self-efficacy with higher self-care, and vice versa: low self-efficacy subjects were prone to choose the lower self-care assessment questionnaire values. Study participants’ with type II diabetes anxiety and depressive symptoms registration was directly related to lower self-care and self-efficacy.
