Magnesium fluoride is a commonly used material in laser systems due to its optical transmission for ultraviolet radiation. Yet production of magnesium fluoride optical components is a slow and difficult process. During final stages of its surface polishing cracks and other subsurface defects are formed. All of this defines its surface roughness and strongly affects its resistivity to laser induced damage. The main goal of this work is to evaluate surface roughness of magnesium fluoride optical compnents and to measure laser induced damage threshold using femtosecond pulses.
