Cette thèse poursuit un double objectif. D’une part, étudier les transformations contemporaines du rituel de mariage catholique en France à partir d’une observation ethnographique de l’ensemble des activités qui composent le rite – de la préparation à la célébration. D’autre part, évaluer la pertinence de la théorie foucaldienne des « techniques de soi » pour rendre compte de ces activités. Cette double dimension, ethnographique et théorique, constitue le fondement d’une « philosophie de terrain » dont on définit les enjeux méthodologiques.
